Events in the story that go with 12 songs.
1.
Janie walks through the town and all of the people in the town see
her. They gossip about her and say she is up to no good. People
gather on a porch to watch Janie
pass
through.
For this event, I picked the song “The Fire Inside” by Bob Seger
because it is about internal struggles people have to deal with. When
Janie is walking through the town, she hides her “fire inside”
because she feels like she has to keep her head held high.

2.
Janie attained a protective love with Logan Killicks. Much like the
love from Nanny. Logan represents security for Janie, as he owns a
60-acre potato farm. For Janie, however, this protective love does
not satisfy her need for the love that she has always desired.
I picked "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor for this event
because this song relates to Janie really well. Janie felt protected
by Logan, but was sacred to leave him. Then she thought about how he
treated her and she left. This song is about surviving after a
relationship.

3.
Janie runs off with Joe Starks. He was charming and caught Janie's
eye. Janie feels like she may have found her true love she has been
looking for.
For the this event, I picked the song “Fallin’ For You” by
Colbie Caillat because it describes the way Janie was first feeling
about Joe. “I’ve been spending all my time just thinking about
ya. I don’t know what to do, I think I’m falling for you.” This
is how Janie felt about leaving Logan, she was unsure. In the end,
she chose Joe because he seemed perfect for her.

4.
Janie feels like her love with Joe is fading. The love that Janie
feels with Joe is a
possessive
love.
For this event, I chose the song “King of Anything” by Sara
Bareilles. This song seemed to fit because Joe thought he was the
“king” of Janie. He would boss her around and tell her what to
do. She did not like that he bossed her around and he acted different
around people.
5.
When Joe died, Janie felt a sense of relief. She also felt a new
independence she never had before.
For this event, I chose the song “Stand” by Rascal Flatts. This
song is about being strong and moving on. After the death of Joe,
Janie found independence. She had to learn to live on her own. She
was strong and picked herself up.

6.
After Joe Starks died, Janie met Tea Cake. She fell for him, but was
hesitant. She thought he was too old for her.
For this event, I chose the song “Smile” by Uncle Kracker. This
song relates to Janie because Tea Cake made her smile and laugh. She
could not stop thinking about Tea Cake. Janie was herself
around him, she quickly fell in love.
7.
Janie realized that her love for Tea Cake was what she had always
wanted. She found "the one."
For this event, I chose the song “The One” by Elton John. This
song relates to Janie’s feelings about Tea Cake. She was longing
for a lasting love and with Tea Cake she knew she found it. Janie
believed Tea Cake was the one she was going to be with for the rest
of her life.

8.
Tea Cake and Janie leave Eatonville behind for a fresh start.
For this event, I chose the song “You Raise Me Up” by Josh
Groban. Janie and Tea Cake left Eatonville for a new start. Janie
needed someone there for her to raise her up. Tea Cake was supportive
and cared for her. He understood her and wanted to give her the best
future possible.
9.
Janie felt jealousy for the first time when a woman named Nunkie
started flirting with
Tea
Cake in the fields.
For this event, I chose the song “Over My Head” by Fleetwood Mac.
I chose this song because Janie feels jealous when Tea Cake talks to
Nunkie. She feels like she may be wasting her time with Tea Cake, but
realizes she does want to be with him. She does love him and
wants to be with him.
10.
A hurricane comes while Janie and Tea Cake are at home, and flees
them from their home. As they made an effort to get to higher ground,
water swept them into the current. Tea Cake tried to keep Janie
afloat by holding onto a cow's tail. While clinging to the tail, a
rabid dog bit Tea Cake. This shows Tea Cake really loves Janie and
would do anything for her.
For this event, I chose the song “All You Need is Love” by The
Beatles. I chose this song because the main message of the song is
love. Tea Cake and Janie’s relationship is all about love. Tea Cake
saved her life out of love for her. He loved her so much that he took
the pain that she would have had.
11.
Tea Cake died from the bite. Janie was devastated and wished the dog
would have bit her instead. Janie wondered why God would take Tea
Cake while he was trying to save her.
For this event, I chose the song, “For Good” by Wicked. I thought
this song was a good fit because Janie was changed by Tea Cake. He
came into her life as a positive influence. She learned a lot from
him and he will always be with her like a “handprint on her heart.”

12.
At the end of the story, Janie finishes her life story. She had found
the peace she had desired her whole life.
For this event, I chose the song “100 Years” by Five for
Fighting. I thought this song fit well because Janie reflects back on
her life at the end of the book. She found the peace she had been
hoping to find her whole life. As she looked back on the past, she
knew her life was not easy. She made it through though and she was
proud of herself for making it as far as she did.
